A few cool mid summer events around Chicago

Summer is in full swing and there are tons of great environmental activities taking place all around the city.  Here are just a few that look like they’re worth checking out:

 

Wind Energy at Home

Find out if wind power is right for your home at a seminar at the Chicago Center for Green Technology on July 17th from 6-8pm.  George Sullivan from EcoSmart Building will review potential options for wind energy generation at your home.  Call 312-746-9642 to register or visit here for more info.

 

Green Homes Fair

On July 19, there will be a Green Homes Fair, the Chicago Center for Green Technology.  There will be exhibits of local green vendors and courses on green technology and green living.  The event is sponsored by the city of Chicago and it is free.  Call 312-746-4678 for more information or look here.

 

Green Drinks

This months Green Drinks topic is Sustainable Personal Finances: Aligning your Money with your Values. Green Drinks takes place at Jefferson Tap from 5:30 – 8:30 pm on July 23rd.  There will be a panel discussion and the cost is $5.  See website for more info.

Bike to the Botanic Gardens                                                                                                                      Join the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club on a bike ride along the N. Branch River Trail to the Botanic Gardens.  The ride will take place on Saturday, July 26th and the cost is $3.  Check out the Sierra Club for more info.

Theater and Nature

This is an event for someone who loves both nature and the arts.  See a performance of Taming of the Shrew performed as a hike at the North Park Village Nature Center.  The performance will take place at 1pm on both July 26th and 27th.  Call 312-744-5472 for more info.

 

Summer Evening Nature Walk

On July 30th, come to one of many summer evening walks at North Park Village Nature Center.  Call the Nature Center at 312-744-5472 for more information and to find out about additional dates. 

 

City of Chicago Environmental Resource and Recycling Event

Head to Northeastern Illinois University on August 9 to recycle household hazardous waste, computers, medications and more.  Compact fluorescent bulbs, compost bins and rain barrels will also be available.  Visit the Chicago Department of Environment for more information.

Upcoming Events - May 25, 2008

Here are a few interesting events coming up at the end of May and beginning of June. The theater hike at North Park Village sounds particularly fun and we love bike to work week! As always, be sure to check in with the sponsoring organization before attending any events.

May 30th

Late Great Nocturnal Night

Have you ever thought about the nighttime wildlife in the city? Come to an event to learn about Chicago’s wildlife at night. You can look for skunks, raccoon, and more at the Late Great Nocturnal Night event on Friday, May 30, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the North Park Village Nature Center. No registration is required. May 31

Natural Lawn Care for Homeowners

You can find out about natural care for your lawn, and why natural care is good for both you and the environment. Steve Pincuspy, of the Safer Pest Control Project will be the speaker for this event at the Chicago Center for Green Technology. It will take place from 10am to noon on Saturday, May 31st. This is a Green Tech U program, and it is free, but you must register in advance at 312-746-9642, or by emailing greentech@cityofchicago.org with “Green Tech U” as the subject line. Include the class name and contact information.

May 31 and June 1

Theatre-Hikes at North Park Village Nature Center

Take a hike and watch a play at the same time! The play Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, suitable for children and adults, will be performed from 1:00pm to 3:00 pm at the nature center. Tickets are $6.00 for children and $10.00 for adults. For more information, call 312-744-5472.

June 3

Chicago Green Drinks - Business Edition

This popular recurring activity will take place at 6:45 pm at the Jefferson Tap and Grille, 325 N. Jefferson, with a panel discussion on the topic Resources for Sustainable Businesses. There will be time for “power networking” from 5:45 to 6:45 pm. The cost is $7.00, and you must be at least 21. Call (773) 271-1990 for more information.

June 7th – 13th

Bike to Work Week – June 7th – 13th

There will be a number of activities throughout Chicago in celebration of Bike to Work Week. The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation will be holding the 2008 Bicycle Commuter Challenge Visit www.biketraffic.org for more info or to sign up yourself or your company. There are events for commuters and prizes for winners. You can also learn how to ride safely and comfortably to work.

Week of May 4th

This week you could get out of the city and go visit an organic vegetable farm or you can help clean up the Chicago River and enjoy a great river party!  Read on for more info.  As usual be sure to check with the sponsoring organization before attending an event.

Visit an organic vegetable farm!

The Green Earth Institute is holding their 5th Annual Green Earth Fair: “Living Green!”  From 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM, in Naperville, at 10S404 Knoch Knolls Rd., Naperville, IL.  You can learn about “earth-friendly practices” with speakers, demonstrations, and tours, as well as other activities and entertainment. There will also be organic vegetable seedlings and native plants for sale. Visit the Green Earth Institute website for more info.

Network for Evanston’s Future Earth Month Event

The Network for Evanston’s Future is holding its 5th Annual Earth Month Event: Creating a Climate for Change.  There will be a variety of speakers and presentations, tips on how to make green changes in our lives, and a tour of  JRC, the “greenest’  synagogue in the country. This event takes place from 1:45-5:00 pm, at the Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation, 303 Dodge, in Evanston. Visit the Network for Evanston’s Future website for more info.

Chicago Green Drinks – Business Edition

Chicago Green Drinks is an ongoing program, which provides time for networking as well as learning about environmental activities. Chicago Green Drinks - Business Edition, will explore the topic “Greening your Office for Spring,” at the Jefferson Tap & Grille, 325 Jefferson St, from 5:30pm–8:30pm. Sunday, May 10

Chicago River Day

The Friends of the Chicago River is holding the 16th annual Chicago River Day. Almost 4000 volunteers are expected from the community, schools, and businesses to help out at this work day and celebration all along the Chicago River. In the morning, 9:00 to noon, there will be a work day, collecting refuse, removing invasive vegetation, planting native vegetation, and generally cleaning up the river’s edge. In the afternoon, from noon to 3:00 pm, all are invited to a Chicago River festival, with food, music, and an environmental fair. The morning’s activities will take place at more than 60 sites along the Chicago River, and the afternoon’s festival will be at River Park, 5100 N. Francisco, in Chicago. The Chicago Green Festival

The Green Festival is a national organization that is holding its Chicago event on May 17th and 18th at Navy Pier.  There will be over 350 exhibitors, over 100 speakers and many other events.  Many Chicago organizations and businesses are involved.  Visit the website for more info.

City Wilds Festival at North Park village Nature Center

Saturday and Sunday June 14 & 15

We are changing our events page a little bit. There is so much going on in the Chicago area that we can’t possibly list everything, so instead we are going to focus on finding a few particularly interesting events for each week and just describe those. Richard J. Daley Urban Forum

In 2008, for the first time, half the people in the world will live in cities, so urban areas most certainly have a huge effect on the environment. The 4th Annual Richard J. Daley Urban Forum, will feature mayors from all over the world who will be discussing the social and economic effects of this mass urbanization. Here are the details of the forum:

Urban Potager Herb and Scented Plant Sale

It is finally spring in the Chicago area, and that means it is time to plant a garden, no matter where you live! The Urban Potager (Kitchen Garden) Herb and Scented Plant Sale, will be held from 8:00am to 3:00 pm, at the Oak Park Conservatory, 615 Garfield Street, Oak Park, IL.

The Friends of the Oak Park Conservatory are selling edible plants for a “kitchen garden.” You can buy vegetables and herbs, suitable for growing in this area, many of which can be grown in containers. For more information contact, fopcon@earthlink.net or call 708-725-2460.

 

Earth Fest in Highland Park

Take the metra or ride your bike to the Ravinia metra station to celebrate green living. The Earth Fest will take place from 11:00 am to 3:00pm on Saturday at Jens Jensen Park, Ravinia Metra Station, and the surrounding Ravinia Business district in Highland Park. There will be booths, live entertainment, games, presentations on sustainable design and green business, and many other activities. For more info see the website here.

Seeds of Change: Fair Trade Festival

Come to Lincoln Square to the Seeds of Change: Fair Trade Festival, sponsored by Berry United Methodist Church. There will be vendors promoting sustainability, organic products, and helping the local economy. There will also be live local music. Illinois Solar and Wind Workshops

If you are a home or business owner who is interested in using alternative energy then you may want to attend one of the solar and wind workshops presented by the Illinois Solar Energy Association. These workshops will take place on several occasions at the Chicago Center for Green Technology, 445 N. Week of April 20th

April 22nd is Earth Day and there are a number of ways that you can celebrate throughout the week. Whether you want to get outside and help clean a park or attend a presentation about the intersection of art and nature, there is something for you. As usual we try to list everything accurately, but things change and mistakes happen so be sure to check with the sponsoring organization before attending an event. Many events also require pre-registration. Most events are located within the City of Chicago.

Earth Day Clean-Up

There will be an Earth Day park clean up at 9:00am at Indian Boundary Park and Cultural Center, 2500 W. Lunt Ave.

April 22

Chicago Green Drinks

Head to a Chicago Green Drinks event to socialize, network, and learn about the environment as part of this continuing series. There will be a Green town Hall Meeting with Sadhu Johnston, Chief environmental Officer, city of Chicago. The event is from 5:30–8:30pm, with the panel discussion about 6:30. Fulton Market Earth Night: Unearth Beauty

The Fulton Market is hosting an Earth Month celebration, spearheaded by the Pivot boutique. There will be sculpture created from trash and gallery openings of environmentally themed art. It will take place from 5:00 pm -8:00 pm, at Fulton Market & Aberdeen, 1101 West Fulton Market. A number of local businesses are participating in this free event. Art, Architecture and Nature

DePaul University is the site of a panel titled “eARTh day: Art, Architecture & Nature.” This will take place at 7:00 pm, at 2325 N. Green and Growing Fair

The Garfield Park Conservatory is holding the Green and Growing Fair: An Urban Gardening Festival, from 10:00am to 3:00 pm on Saturday, April 26th. This free event is sponsored by GreenNet, Chicago’s Urban Greening Network and it will feature a variety of vendors, workshops and activities taking place throughout the Conservatory.
